Since I’m not a “professional” player, I initially only dared to deposit small amounts at Casino Club and play with them. Since I didn’t want the casino or its operators to show up on my account statements in any way, I bought Paysafecards worth 25 euros each instead and used them to top up my casino account. Then I had the choice which of the five Blackjack variants I should try and simply entered the classic Blackjack. This is the variant of the game that is played in the casinos of America and thus also in most online casinos.
Although I knew that classic Blackjack was different from the 17-and-4 that is more common in Germans, for example because all picture cards have the value 10 instead of individual values, in the beginning I often got confused with counting my points and bought myself a few times. But with a little more practice the routine came and I was able to play my cards better. That made itself then also in my profit loss balance noticeable. If I lost 15 Euro in small stakes of 1 to 2 Euro at the beginning, the losses in the course of my gaming experience were reduced to a maximum of 4 to 5 Euro and meanwhile I have enough experience to leave a game of Blackjack with a positive result that fluctuates between 5 and 10 Euro if I only risk small stakes.
Other Blackjack variations
After spending a few rounds at the classic Blackjack table, I wanted to see what the other versions had to offer at Casino Club. That’s why I’ve decided to try European Blackjack, which plays according to European casino rules. However, the differences to classic Blackjack were minor and for me as a casual player rather uninteresting. The only difference I noticed was the order in which the cards were dealt. Unlike classic Blackjack, European Blackjack starts with the dealer getting one card, then the players get their cards, and only then does the dealer draw his second card. This rule may be important for professional players to develop a better strategy or something like that, but it didn’t mean much to me, since I was concentrating on my cards anyway.
What I found more exciting was the 2-against-1 version of Blackjack. It works like the classic Blackjack, but it has a special option that you can bet on, namely 2-versus-1. If you bet on this option, you don’t have to win in the real sense to get back some of the money you bet. 2-versus-1 is about having the first two cards equal to or higher than the dealer’s first cards. This means that if the dealer draws a 10 as the first card, I must have a 10 or a picture card at the beginning to win. I found that my starting hand was much better than my ending hand more often, so I could often win at least a small amount with 2 vs 1, even though I didn’t win as often against the dealer.
Between pleasure and frustration
I’ve never really seen myself as a “gambler”, but still I got carried away by Blackjack. I was often just about to give up the game. Because especially at the beginning Blackjack was still new and exciting for me, but also quite frustrating. As already mentioned, I often had problems counting the correct values of the cards in the beginning, so I overbought myself and lost my money. That was quite frustrating. But after I had gotten used to counting the face cards according to 17-and-4 rules (i.e. Jacks = 2, Queens = 3 and King = 4), things slowly got a little better, the losses became less and I could judge my cards better. This gradually reduced my frustration and I enjoyed the game more. There were sometimes days when the cards weren’t ideal for me and I started with a bad hand or had to pay more to get on a green branch, but that’s normal in a game of chance and nothing to be annoyed about for too long. Nowadays, when I notice that I’ve caught a bad round or the game starts boring me or frustrating me, I just switch tables and play a few rounds of 2-against-1. The 2-against-1 option gives me the necessary “thrill” where the first cards are already exciting and can decide whether to win or lose. And since I often have a good starting hand, I dare to bet more often, even if the losses may be greater. But it’s not about the big money when I play, but more about the pleasure of the game itself. That’s why I’ll certainly continue to play Blackjack and maybe try the other tables at Casino Club. I don’t want to try a completely different casino or game like poker at the moment, because I’m used to Blackjack now and it’s quite pleasant to play a few rounds in the evening after work to finish the day.
